CYCLE TRACKS
SCHÜRMANN TRACK  NR. 118

ALL AFRICAN GAMES  2003
ABUJA / NIGERIA

    THE TRACK
Velodrome Abuja / Nigeria
Computer rendering
Our first track on the African continent.

Now SCHÜRMANN ARCHITECTS have executed tracks on all five continents of the world.

The velodrome is part of a large complex in vincity of the "Main Bowl", a large, olympic-size stadium in the new capital of Nigeria.
Abuja is located in the central part of Nigeria. A fast growing city, in which the All African Games 2003 will be held.

Earthwork preparation
The weather and temperature conditions made this project an extremely demanding task.

During construction
Frequent and heavy tropical rainfall, high humidity and high temperatures always around 30° C (and above) created a lot of difficulties during the execution.

In addition the locally available materials for the construction were difficult to obtain and needed a lot of individual treatment and preparation before they could be used for constructing a cycle track of highest standard.
In spite of all the problems it was finally possible to reach an extremely good result. In the end -as always- everybody was happy about the work and specially the achieved quality. Abuja is certainly the most up-to-date installation and the concrete track with the highest standard on the African continent. It took a lot of discussions, manpower, time and personal effort to create such a result.
